Feb 29, 2012 8:27am Pacific from Mitch Valder of Sacramento, CA.
Biggest news early in the Fray Week is that the heaters are ON in Belotti Hall. It was a welcome surprise to enter a . . . well, I wouldn't call it WARM, but a pleasantly comfortable room.
Nice contrast to the driving rain just outside.
Back to it . . .
Mitch

No new news from the Frayers. I can only presume they are busy testing, tuning and shooting the bull. As soon as I hear from anyone in Ferndale, I'll be sure to post it here.

Just practice today. Team IROC tomorrow.
Mar 1, 2012 6:29am Pacific from Dave Parker of Hunstville, AL
Heat? What Heat?
Maybe in the morning... but by the time the sun fell, so did the heat. Oh well... it was time to head to the brewery anyway.
Day one was practice/practice/practice. 9 tables... 54 lanes... 54 different perspectives as to how badly I sucked.
But I got to shake Rick Jocham's hand, so the day wasn't a total loss! LOL
Lots of fast drivers with faster cars than I have ever seen on a t-jet track. A virtual Who's Who of t-jet racers/dealers (no offense to those on the East Coast who couldn't/didn't make the trip). Really great to put a face with so many names.
Rick Phyllis let it be known he is here for more than serving as race director as he won an impromptu practice race with about 25 racers.
Maybe today the lanes will look more familiar. Or at least maybe the heat will be back on! ;-)

Mar 1, 2012 7:33am Pacific from Rick Phillis of Ferndale, CA
About fifty have arrived so far. The other half will be here by
Friday. There have been two practice races so far with first being won
by Chad Trump. Some of the new faces are from St Louis, Huntsville
Alabama, Salt Lake City, Eugene Oregon and the East Coast.
Today's event will be the team IROC race with five teams signed up so far.
That's all for now,
RAP
Mar 1, 2012 8:00am Pacific from Dave Parker of Huntsville, AL
Junkabilly's Question: Do they race only fray cars or are there other classes as well?
Dave's Answer:
Nothin' but fray.... individual race tomorrow, team races (16 or 17 of them) on Saturday. 10 lap heats for each racer on the 5-person team on each lane. So 60 laps times 16 races... around a 1000 laps of intense racing.

Fray - Day Two - "I can't see!!!"
Well, now I feel like less like a rookie. I almost feel comfortable on 3 of the 54 different lanes. Only 51 more to go!
Still meeting lots of the "old hands"... still learning tons of ways to go fast. 15 minutes of time with xxxx was worth the price of admission. (trying not to list names... there really are many... many notable t-jet racers and builders here and would hate to mention someone specifically and not mention everyone else. suffice to say, I am humbled... and not worthy.)
A "practice" IROC race yesterday. My team "Inland Empire" finished well... 4 wins and 3 losses (after one team called in some ringer replacements.) I think I finished 35th out of about 46 racers. I seem to recall RAP at the top of the list. (dang it... I said I wouldn't mention names.
Gotta tell you... if you have never been, mark your calendars for nest year!
Dave

(In response to Greg Carpenter wishing and hoping the best for people in Dave's area of the country due to the hurricane outbreak)
Greg,
Thanks for the thoughts... all the family is fine, but the exact same subdivision that got hit last year just north of our house got hit again this year.
Dave
I'm very relieved that Dave's family came through the day unscathed. I wonder how his cars and trigger finger did today. -Cory

More from the Fray - the individual event.
Just a short update... it's been a looooong day. I think we had every letter of the alphabet for the mains... 81 racers... but in the end it was Adams, Boswell, Hurley, Jocham, Lincoln and Voeglin making it to the A-main. Holy crap did those guys put on a show with some incredibly fast cars. But it wasn't much of a surprise when the computer popped up the results and RC Lincoln had won the individual competition. He dominated many of the heats leading up to the main. Adams was second, Jocham was third, followed by Voeglin, Hurley and Boswell.
Another long day tomorrow... 18 teams, so 17 races. But the cars are impound, so nothing to do tonight but sleep. :-)

What a day in Ferndale!
Absolutely the greatest day of racing I have ever experienced. Great teammates... great tracks... great competition. Captain Mickey Hurtado had a great quote to start the day - When Chris "Action" Jackson asked about what to do about having butterflies, Mickey's response was "Get them to fly in formation." That line helped me to deal with the chaos, carnage, and comraderie to come. Just keep it together.
Saw one post already about the winners... listed the captains, but each team was full of great racers. Also, there were 98 racers there today, including a few younger racers and some local newcomers. I'm pretty sure EVERYONE had a great time. As for me, at the end of the day I got a little brass plate that says "The Fray in Ferndale 2012". Most expensive plate I have ever bought, and worth every penny. For those who have the opportunity, make the trip someday... you won't regret it.

Congratulations to Team SoCal for their win in the team race on Saturday.
Congratulations to RC Lincoln for his win in the individual race on Friday.
Congratulations to Team Ferndale for their win in the team IROC race on Thursday.
I'd like to take a moment and thank all of you who have contributed to this post, viewed this post or spread word of it. It's been a fun experience and I can NOT wait to see pictures and hear stories of the 15th annual Fray in Ferndale.
I know the information is a little incomplete right now. I will tackle that in the morning. I would appreciate any information you may have regarding yourself, your friends or teammates so that I can complete the final results info.
Safe journeys, racers. I hope you got seriously Frayed.

Here are a few pics. Feel free to repost.
Best line of the event. "We should use the purple track as kindling to burn the red track."
My best memories of the Fray
1. The whole atmosphere of the event. Thanks Rick Phillis!
2. Trying to learn 54 different lanes.
3. Paul Josefy and Paul Leuty having great runs in qualifying.
4. Almost making the A main. So close. Thanks to Rick Jocham for a great car.
5. Meeting the manufacturers of the sport. RC Lincoln, Greg Davis, Brad Bowman and others.
6. Hanging out with our NorCal group and especially Team Sacramento.
(In response to Alan VanDoren's (of TRACK) congrats on his third place in the IROC race.)
Third? Nope, we were 6th. The 1/2/3 teams were very strong and smoked us. They were the cream of the crop, and the racing among them was very close... 1st tied with 3rd, but beat 2nd, and 2nd beat 3rd (just barely). One or two different placements would have changed the results. But we gave 4th and 5th a good run, and upset a couple of other teams.
Sounds like you guys had a great time as well. I'm looking forward to a nice "relaxing" club race later this month. LOL
Dave
oops... yep, we were 3rd in the IROC, but that was an 'unofficial' race with only 8 teams entering. We tied for 6th (out of 17) in the team event, which is the focus at the Fray.

Here are some of the tracks while they were bring loaded up for storage.
In a little bit of a backward move on my part, the qualifying times have been posted on the Fray site. They can be found here.
Qualifying times.
Also, the individual car pictures have been posted. They all look so cool.

Great to see these reports. Can't wait until Rick can get online streaming timing and scoring set up.
Our Inland Empire team won the head to head race against R C Lincoln's Florida team on the Orange table. Even so, our teams were tied at 10-6-0. Best finish ever for the Inland Empire team. Much thanks to my team mates Mike Engelage, Chris Jackson, Brad Bowman and newcomer, who made a good accounting for himself, David Parker. You're all invited back again next year. It was an awesome reunion with old friends and met a bunch of new ones as well. I'm exhausted. Thanks for driving Brad.
--Mickey Hurtado
Had a great time Mickey! Note the team picture above (purple track)... except we all got our heads cut off!
Dude! Sweet! Our only team picture from the weekend ;^(
We all have to go back next year to get a proper team pic. LOL
The list of individual points from the team competition was also posted at the end of the day Saturday. Rick Jocham ended up being first with the most points won. Rookie of the Year came from the DCM team (sorry, can't remember his name... great young racer)... he was in the top five. For many on the individual list above, the ranking is really just the qualifying order, as many of us raced once and were out.
First FRAY for me and my St.Louis teammates. We did better than we had expected with a 9-7 record good for 9th place! We got a lot of help from our two 'free agent' teammates Lewis (from NC) and Chad (local guy). The team event was the most fun day I have ever had racing. The intensity just never lets up!
The individual event was fun but brief for each of us. We qualified well but by the time we each got in, there were a pack of great racers already on the track and it was impossible to break into the top 3 to advance. I did manage to beat RJ in one heat and that was the highlight of my day, but otherwise in my other 5 heats I looked very much the rookie compared with all the other top notch veteran racers on the track!
IROC race was a great warmup especially for us newbies to get a handle on how things run. If it wasn't for that, the main team event would have been COMPLETE chaos (rather than just moderate chaos).
We'll be back next year for sure.
For the record the STL team consisted of: Jeff Kraatz, Ron Schmidt, Chad Trump, Alan VanArtsdalen and Lewis Wuori
Thanks so much to everyone for sharing your experiences and information. This is a lot of fun. Keep it coming!
That's actually not the orange track, that is the gold track pictured.
These are what I remember on teams (but I wouldn't bet my life on
my memory)
DCM - Anthony, Dave Simms, Jerry Boswell, James Tindall, Donnie Auriema, Jeff Crosley
SFO - Jeff Hurley, Ron Coaxan, Paul Josephey, Ken Stephens, Steve Testerman
Tx/Mid West - Rick Machardo, Steve Godinez (GoGo), Walter McClurg, Phil Laurio,
Ferndale - Phillis, Al Michel, Dennis Ryan, Jamie Jorgenson, Josh Jorgenson
Thanks for the help, Lewis! I should have noticed the difference between the orange and gold tracks.
I don't see Dave Simms or Walter McClurgh on the individual results. Maybe they only participate in the team event?
Walter did not run the indy event. When Ken was bumped, and Walter was up next, but not present, Ken did his best Walter impersonation.
James Tindall is your Pinball Wizard(Rookie of the Year)!
Hi Cory,
Great compilation of information from the Fray! Just now getting caught up from a long weekend! I'll have some pics to load up soon.
It was another enjoyable Fray! It was great to meet some new faces this year, and catch up with the usual suspects too. The level of competition was incredible!
Some highlights for me were...
-Great qualifying efforts from many of the racers that participated in the Northern CA Bay to Fray Series. Most notably for me were Paul Josefy, Glen Schneiderman, Paul Leuty and Mitch Valder. Let's just say that I wish I had put a few bucks on any of those guys to qualify as well as they did. My parts bill would have been much less painful! :-) Great showing by ALL of the NorCA guys! Overall, a great showing from our group of racers in indy and team standings.
-My most memorable heat during team competition. It was against the Florida team on the tan table. Against Clayton St. Clair (he in orange, and me in green). From the green flag, he and I jumped out to an early lead, with me chasing. I don't think we were ever more than six inches away from each other, and we traded places a few times during the 10 laps, never touching wheels. I ended up getting the win by a car length or two. After, we shook each others hands, and realized that has happened to us at least once every year our two teams meet! It is really something to be able to trust a guy like that when you only race with him one time a year!
-The IROC racing on Thursday. It was a great way for some of the new guys to get a feel for how things would go on Saturday. For me, it really helped me get some track time on lanes that I otherwise may not have run. The one common theme for all of the IROC races was the white lane cars. No matter what team put the white car on the track, it was always the "turd" of the group! Either it was just plain slow, or good speed and undrivable! It seemed that if anyone got a better finish than 6th with white, it was an accomplishment!
Anyway, thanks to my Team Southbay teammates most of all (who, for the record are...Ron Coaxum, Dan Jimenez, Paul Josefy, Ken Stephens and Steve Testerman) for making this event such an enjoyable one every year!
Cheers,
-Jeff Hurley
Dave Simms did not participate in the individuals, but I thought I remembered Walter (there it goes, trying to remember again...).
There were 100 participants in the Team event Saturday so there were alot of people who didn't participate in the individuals.
SFO should have been South Bay on my last post.
Team Neanderthal (Geoff Campbell, racing in FRHO and MHOSA and Serge Arrestouilh of FRHO and MHOSA as well) from Summit County Colorado met up with Rookies Don Haase(SLC) Cedric Fairweather(Cheyenne,Wyoming) and (lost my notes and mind) Mr. Dudely, MP for a few days of racing toy cars...we competed fairly well campaigning last years' model cars, winning a few and losing a lot in close scoring; Although Geoff kept up with some of the Greats, the points were mostly won by the other teams! We got an entire season or driving in just one day; quite the experience. It's the traumatic pace of constant driving that makes it memorable; of doing battle and surviving/the driving matches seem small to some of the great efforts in preparation and tuning in order to get the last oz of horsepower out of the little machines; I had two great ones that alternated the various tracks in our sorties. Serge-Jets made a debut(building cars for the rookies and doing all the pit work and Captaining the team/Great Job holding us together(since Geoff is on assignment working in LA)).
Congratulations, Cory! This 2012 FRAY Update page was a fantastic idea! I've been hooked since the 1st day I came here.
And a big ol' thanks to Dave Parker. You're continuing posts made a huge impact on this endeavor, Sir. You really helped me share in the excitement, fer sure.
Congratulations, Serge & Geoff! Y'all knock 'em in the dirt next year!
I have one question, though, Cory (or anyone).
How were the selections for the All Fray & All Fray IROC teams determined? Just wonderin'.
Thanks again for your efforts. --- John
Thanks, John! It was a lot of fun and exciting to be able to get near real-time information out of the fray that is the Fray.
The All-Fray IROC and All-Fray Team teams are derived from drivers' scoring averages during their respective events.
-Cory
Has anyone seen the final individual standings from the team events posted yet?
Congrats to team-mate Mike Elderidge for an outstanding 4th place finish on the All-Fray team. Well earned!
Mike Elderidge? Where did that come from?? My brain must still be fried. Sorry Mike (Engelage).
Dave
I heard from Rick Phillis that his web guru has all the info and just needs to format it and post it.
Patience, grasshopper.
First time at the fray , all i can say is WOW . Team ST.LOUIS will be back next year for shure .
And for the record , the ORANGE track is great to race on . It was my vote for the individual race .
Jeff, you are a sick man! :-)
LOL! My first thought was why are you calling yourself names Mr Hurley. But then I saw it was directed toward Jeff Kratz and his orange track love.
My second thought was of Henry Harnish. Henry had alot of strong feelings about the orange track also, but it definitly wasn't love! I can't even type the choice words Henry used to describe the orange track.
